How to get recruited for track and field.
Your athlete gets recruited when the right event coaches see a mark that fits their program. That means knowing which colleges fit, reaching each event coach directly, and following up with every new mark until coaches reply. Most lists get built in junior year.

How does track and field recruiting work?
Track recruiting runs on marks. Results are public, rosters are small, and college coaches get far more emails than they can answer, so they recruit the athletes who reach them with a time or distance the roster needs. A fast athlete who never contacts a coach usually stays off the list, and that is how good athletes get missed.
What are the steps to get recruited?
- Find the colleges where the marks fit. Enter your athlete’s event and best mark in Track Standards, our free college finder. It shows every program that mark fits across 1,157 colleges, and that list is where recruiting starts.
- Build a wide list. Most families reach 30 or more programs across several divisions, so there are real choices when replies come in. Pick by where the marks fit and what your athlete wants from college.
- Contact each event coach directly. The sprint coach and the distance coach are different people. Each email comes from your athlete, names the event and the mark, and links to the results so the coach can check them.
- Follow up with every new mark. One email rarely gets a reply because coaches are buried in their inboxes. Every new mark gives a coach a fresh reason to answer, so keep sending them for months.
- Handle calls, visits and offers. Answer quickly once a coach replies, and ask what each offer covers. Most track scholarships are partial, so compare athletic money and academic aid together.
When should you start?
| Grade | What to do |
|---|---|
| 9th grade | Race often, log legal marks and keep grades strong. This year is about building marks. |
| 10th grade | See where the marks fit and start the list. NCAA D1 coaches can begin calls and emails on June 15 after sophomore year. |
| 11th grade | This is the main recruiting year. D1 coaches can make in-person contact from August 1 before junior year, and most lists get built now. |
| 12th grade | There is still time. Seniors get recruited, especially by D2, D3, NAIA and junior college programs, and fall and indoor marks keep doors open. |

Why do good athletes get missed?
Most of the time the mark was good enough and the outreach wasn’t. One family came to us after their son emailed 100 schools and heard nothing back, and he was recruited to Florida. Another athlete had no offers in her senior spring and went on to earn a D1 scholarship at UC Riverside. You can watch their stories on our results page.
Do you need a recruiting service?
No. A family can do every step on this page. It takes dozens of personal emails, months of follow-ups and quick answers once coaches reply, and that is hard to keep up alongside school and a race season.
Preferred Recruit does that work for you. We email the right coaches from your athlete’s own inbox, follow up for months and guide your family through every reply, visit and offer. We’ve helped 300+ track and field athletes earn $10M+ in scholarships, and you get guaranteed genuine interest or a full refund. See how it works.
Common questions
Is it hard to get recruited for track?
It depends on the mark and the list. A 51.0 in the men’s 400m sits outside a typical D1 roster, but it fits a typical D3 or NAIA program, so athletes who aim at too few schools have the hardest time.
Can you get D1 offers for track?
Yes, when the marks fit the roster. Most D1 track offers are partial scholarships because coaches split their budget across the team, and many families combine athletic money with academic aid.
How many schools should a track athlete contact?
Most families reach 30 or more programs across several divisions. A wide list brings more replies and better offers to compare.
Do college track coaches care about grades?
Yes. After the mark, coaches look at how fast it is improving, grades, which events the roster needs this year and how the athlete competes in championship races.
Which marks count for recruiting?
Fully automatic times and wind-legal marks from sanctioned meets. Club meets count too if the results are public.
Does my athlete need a recruiting video?
Usually not. Track coaches recruit on marks they can verify. A short video helps in technical events like pole vault, hurdles and the throws.
Is it too late to get recruited as a senior?
No. Seniors still get recruited, especially by D2, D3, NAIA and junior college programs.
